About one quarter of the global warming impact of supermarkets comes from the leakage and accidental release of the cooling gases used in refrigeration. Approximately half arises from the energy used to power refrigeration equipment. Refrigeration therefore accounts for some 75% of supermarket stores’ global warming impact.
