Benefits of organic foods

earthcare3Whenever we go for grocery we find ‘Organic” and “Non-Organic”labels on the food products that leave us in a state of doubt when buying. What is the difference between them? Is “organic” really the better choice? What are the benefits of organic food? Is “inorganic” harmful to health?

Organic food, by a large fraction of the population, is considered to be healthier and better in nutritional qualities than non-organic food. But this belief of theirs is likely to be highly influenced by the Organic food producers, marketers of organic food, Animal rights organizations and Environmental groups who promote organic food for different reasons. There hasbeen plenty research conducted in this area but most of the results suggest no major health and nutritional differences between them. Although the organic food concept is a bit too over popularized there is no denying that there are some factual benefits of organic food that can be enjoyed.

Before we discuss the benefits of organic food let’s see what organic food actually refers to:

Organic food is grown by old and traditional methods of agriculture and farming. The use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and bio-engineered genes (GMOs) is not allowed in organic agricultural methods.

Organic livestock breeding is done in the natural environment and livestock is given the opportunity to access the outdoors and graze grass. They are not given growth hormones, antibiotics or animal by-products.

Following are some of the factual benefits of eating organic food that are more than just perceptions:

  1. Greater Amount of Antioxidants

Foods occurring naturally have a large amount of antioxidants in them. Due to the fact that organic agriculture does not make use of foreign chemicals that negatively interact with the minerals, vitamins and other natural compounds, the amount of antioxidants present in the fruits and vegetables is retained in organic foods. Antioxidants work as natural shields that defend our body against heart disease, cancer, vision and brain malfunctions and premature aging. Organic food is also free of heavy toxins.

  1. Free of Unnatural Hormones

The organic livestock is breaded in its natural environment with no artificial hormones and steroids that make them grow a multiple times bigger and quicker. These hormones and steroids are transferred in the human body when inorganic meat and poultry is consumed. This results in hormonal dis-balances, obesity, early maturation of kids and different gastric, liver and kidney problems.

  1. Fewer or No Pesticides

Organically grown food has the greatest health benefit of not having been treated with chemical pesticides. Chemical pesticides are harmful to health as the chemicals used to kill pests and insects have large amount of heavy toxins that are dangerous to human health. Organic farmers are not allowed to use pesticides except for a few non-chemical ones that are not hazardous to health. With organic foods you do not have to worry about swallowing any toxins with the food. Although you might find an insect in the fruit once in a while but that is far less dangerous to health than the toxic chemicals used in pesticides.

  1. No Antibiotics

Organic foods give us greater immunity by not destroying our immune system with antibiotic bombardment. In inorganic farming antibiotics are given to the livestock to keep them from getting diseases. These antibiotics are consumed by the humans with the intake of inorganic foods. Overdosing antibiotics in our body may result in confusing the natural immune system and eventually destroying its capability to defend itself.

  1. No GMOs

Genetic Modification has been a great area of interest for food growers and farmers in the recent years. The fact that it has not been tested on humans yet and the long term effects of these foods are unknown to us makes Organic foods an obvious choice for us. In animal testing, genetically modified food showed increase in birth mortality, sexual dysfunctions, lower immune system strength, allergen sensitivity and cancers.

  1. Good for Kids and Infants

Organic food is the most beneficial for babies. An average infant is born with 200 toxins and carcinogens in its body. Organic food is 6 times lesser in toxins and carcinogens amount than non-organic foods. Consumption of inorganic food by the mother during pregnancy and by the baby in the early years of its life might lead to an increase in illnesses in the child.

  1. Environmentally Friendly

Organic food is not only beneficial to human health but to the environment as well. As organic food makes use of natural fertilizers, soil, water and air it makes for a non-polluted natural environment that is not only friendly to the present world but will be equally beneficial to our future generations. Preserving a natural and safe environment for the present and future world is one of the major aims of producing organic food.

  1. Animal Friendly

Just as for the human health and environment, Organic food is beneficial to animal health as well. The artificial methods of breeding animals are done by confining animals to cages and giving them non-natural feed which is inhumane treatment to the animals.
