Earthcare: Optimising Power Savers

Optimising Power Savers can cut power consumption by supplying a refrigeration or air conditioning system with precisely the amount of energy it requires for every possible load demand.

By constantly monitoring the load on the unit, the optimising function can regulate the electrical supply to the unit to match precisely what is needed. In this way the running costs and wear and tear on the unit are cut. The amount that can be saved will always be a function of the load characteristics, duty cycle, supply voltage, motor type and rating of the appliance and application; however, typically savings of up to 10% of the motor rated kW may be achieved.

		Cost savings and other benefits can be derived from the soft starting process and include: .
		• better performance of the motor by reduction of motor losses;
		• reduction of heating losses in cabling due to lower voltages;
		• initial inrush currents are minimised, preventing 'spikes';
		• potential reduction of peak load and maximum demand charges;
		• reduced wear and tear on all the drive train components;
		• extended lifetime on electrical contactors as they may be closed and opened off load;
		• reduced maintenance and replacement costs.
